What are the health impacts of taking public transport?
May 17, 20244 minAccording to UK government data, a total of 6.5 billion passenger journeys were completed using public transport vehicles like buses, trains and tram systems, in the year to March 2023. Packed platforms, overcrowded carriages and uncertain schedules are just some of the issues public transport commuters have to deal with on a regular basis, not to mention the occasional strike. Being crammed into a tube, bus or train with other commuters can make you feel oppressed, fatigued or even suffocated. Some people experience dizziness and anxiety, and fainting isn’t uncommon. What about psychological impacts? Public transport always seems dirty too, doesn't it? How can I safeguard my health then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Does true crime help us fall asleep?
May 16, 20244 minFor some, true-crime stories have a strangely calming effect when they are tucked up in bed for the night. It’s a phenomenon that’s not gone unnoticed on TikTok, where people share how tales of mystery and suspense are part of their go-to nighttime routine. If you’re one of those who drift off to the narration of unsolved cases, rest assured, you’re in good company. And although the link between crime stories and relaxation has yet to be formally established, it's clear that the habit has a huge following. It’s an intriguing paradox: the very stories that chill us to the bone also usher us into slumber. Like a modern twist on the bedtime story, these narratives shift our focus away from daily stressors—be it looming work deadlines, pending homework, or endless to-do lists. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine even suggests that immersing ourselves in a story at bedtime can not only lead to better sleep but also enhance digestion and cognitive function. Why does it relax us? But Why Choose Crime Stories? Isn't it a bit weird to be fascinated by this kind of story? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Why do we sweat?
May 15, 20245 minThe last week or so has seen temperatures reach around 20° in the south of England, and you can expect to see similar temperatures for the next month or so as we head into summer. Whenever the weather warms up, there’s always a temptation to try to mask any odours or stains that are coming from our sweaty bodies, but it’s worth bearing in mind that sweating is actually a crucial bodily function. Did you know that sweat is a watery solution that contains mostly water, but also some minerals and proteins. Just what is the purpose of sweat then? Could you be micro-flirting without realising?
May 15, 20245 minThere are plenty of ways to get the attention of someone you're crushing on. It might come very naturally to some, but for others, flirting can be an intimidating proposition. Have you ever wondered if someone is flirting with you, because of their somewhat ambiguous approach? Well, they may have been micro-flirting, a technique that dating experts say is used by shy men in particular. And there are actually some pretty recognisable under-the-radar strategies that qualify as micro-flirting, which is what we’re going to shed light on today. How exactly does one micro-flirt then? Why do shy people tend to veer towards a micro-flirting approach then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! How can I improve my sense of direction?
May 14, 20244 minMany of us feel completely disoriented at times, and are afraid of getting lost, whether in the middle of the city, in the forest, when travelling or in the car. In an age where GPS reigns supreme, many of us have become overly reliant on technology. Yet, there’s a growing desire to hone our natural navigational skills and understand the brain’s role in guiding us. What we call our "sense of direction" is the result of a calculation by our brain, based on data such as leg movement or walking speed, and external information such as visual cues. The brain therefore processes a huge amount of information via two main areas: the hippocampus, which is involved in the memory process and navigation, and the prefrontal cortex, which manages decision-making and planning. Why are some people better at finding their way around? And what about the age-old debate: Do women have a poorer sense of direction? What can we do to improve our spatial orientation? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Why are brownouts getting more and more common in the work world? Why are brownouts getting more and more common in the work world?
May 13, 20245 minResearch by productivity software provider Asana showed that 70% of knowledge workers experienced burnout in 2021. Now we’ve talked about the symptoms of burnout before on Do you Really Know. It's typically characterised by physical and emotional exhaustion at work, and considered a psychiatric condition. But in recent years, the younger generation has been reshaping workplace norms. Many young workers see personal fulfilment as more important than pay when it comes to their jobs. And that’s led to phenomenons like the Great Resignation, which saw record numbers of people quit for that very reason. What's the difference between a brownout and a burnout then? Could wanderlove give you more dating options?
May 11, 20245 minAccording to the most recent figures from the Association of British Travel Agents, the number of people going on holidays alone has soared over the last decade. In 2011, the proportion was just 6%, but in 2023 it had risen to 16%. The organisation’s media release said it showed people have a “strong appetite to go it alone”. And you could say the solo travel trend is part of the wider "self-love" movement, a personal development method named after the best-selling book of the same name written by American clinical social worker Megan Logan. Does the G spot really exist?
May 10, 20245 minAh, the G-spot... An often cited but frequently elusive erogenous zone which has a reputation of being able to unlock intense female orgasms if you know how to stimulate it the right way. The G-spot was first discovered by German gynecologist Ernst Gräfenberg - hence the G part of the name - back in 1950. But the term was only coined in his honour in the 1980s, by a group of researchers who were writing about female ejaculation and popularised Grafenberg’s findings in a book. Gräfenberg attributed three main functions to this hotspot: generating pleasurable sensations, causing swelling, and sometimes leading to female ejaculation. Where is the G-spot said to be located? Is this area really a magic button for intense orgasms? What’s the best way to stimulate the G-spot? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Is it a good idea to fall asleep to music?
May 9, 20244 minMany of us have a ritual of falling asleep to our favorite tunes or a comforting podcast. It’s no surprise we find solace in this routine; after all, music is known to dial down blood pressure and heart rate, ease anxiety, and reduce cortisol levels. The benefits don’t stop there – music can also boost oxytocin production and sweep away those pesky negative thoughts, setting the stage for a peaceful night’s rest. For those battling chronic pain, melodies can be a balm, offering a more tranquil slumber thanks to music’s proven pain-dulling powers. In fact, the innovative Music Care app, developed by Dr. Stéphane Guétin, even lets healthcare providers prescribe tunes as a form of pain management. What’s the best soundtrack for slumber? Does a musical bedtime routine make a difference? Are there any potential pitfalls to this melodic method? And what about falling asleep with the TV on? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Are additives bad for your health?
May 8, 20245 minAccording to The Sun, scientists say that “the average person in the UK now consumes more than eight kilograms of chemical additives every year.” Of course with that being an average figure, it can shoot up even further for those who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods. If you’ve ever looked closely at ingredients lists on the packaging of food you buy in your supermarket, you’ll have noticed the E numbers by which additives can be recognised. Each category has its assigned E numbers. For example, colours are in the 100s, preservatives in the 200s and antioxidants in the 300s. Aren’t additives banned? What are they actually used for? May 8, 20245 minAs of March 2024, the UK inflation rate stood at 3.2%, well below the record levels that had been seen a year prior. Where does our phobia of clowns come from?
May 7, 20244 minClowns are supposed to make you laugh, but often can make you shudder. What is supposed to be a figure of fun is for many the stuff of nightmares. Coulrophobia —the irrational fear of clowns that’s surprisingly common. This has been reinforced by popular culture, and many horror film-makers know that a scary clown is the perfect recipe for thrills, resulting in them becoming an icon of terror. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology in February 2023 surveyed 900 individuals, revealing that 53% experienced clown-related fear. Participants pinpointed clown makeup as the primary source of discomfort, with its distortion of human features creating an air of menace. Unable to discern true emotions behind the painted facade, people feel unsettled by the clown’s unpredictable antics. The Science Behind the Fear What exactly is so unnerving about clowns? How do I know if I'm addicted to sex?
May 6, 20245 minHypersexuality, overactive libido and sex addiction are just a few of many terms used to describe those who simply can’t seem to get enough when it comes to sex. According to UK-Rehab.com, it’s estimated that somewhere between 3% and 6% of adults in the country are addicted to sex. It might be a hot topic these days, but the concept only really surfaced in the late 1970s. The rise of the internet and online pornography is said to have fueled the phenomenon. Why is black associated with grief?
May 3, 20245 minA funeral is one of those rare occasions where you don’t really need to think too much about your choice of outfit. After all, everyone wears black to funerals as a sign of grief, don’t they? Well, that might be true in the Western world, but it’s not necessarily the case everywhere, which is what we’re going to talk about today. In the Western world, funeral customs have long been intertwined with strict dress codes. The tradition of "mourning attire" became widespread across Europe from the Middle Ages onwards, and was particularly stringent during the Victorian era in England. Queen Victoria herself mandated that widows wear black mourning attire, including jewellery, for at least a year. Has that always been the case? What about in other parts of the world then? How quick is premature ejaculation?
May 1, 20245 minAccording to the British Association of Urinological Surgeons, somewhere between 20 and 30% of men experience premature ejaculation. But of those men, less than a quarter actually seek medical advice. That’s despite it being an issue that often takes a toll psychologically on the man and the relationship they have with their partner. If it's always been an issue, it's termed primary premature ejaculation; whereas if it occurs after a period of normal ejaculation, it's called "secondary." Could SMART goals help you reduce stress?
Apr 27, 20245 minAll personal development coaches emphasise the importance of setting goals, even ones that may seem out of reach at first. Doing so not only boosts motivation but also enables gradual achievement. Nowadays a lot of people find this kind of approach almost second nature, but others struggle with it. Why do men often wake up with an erection?
Apr 26, 20245 minA lot of people think that morning erections are triggered by erotic dreams, or a need to pee, but in fact they're a physiological reflex linked to sleep. That’s right - they’re not dependent on sexual arousal at all. And in a somewhat similar way, women actually also experience increased blood flow to the clitoris during the night. Now, the scientific term for a nighttime erection is nocturnal penile tumescence, or NPT for short, and men get a few each night on average. They occur during REM sleep phases, which make up around 20% of total sleep time. What exactly is REM sleep? Are you saying it’s an involuntary reflex then? Is the gut really our "second brain"?
Apr 25, 20244 minYou have surely felt butterflies in your stomach before a big event or had a ‘gut’ feeling about something. You might even say you need to ‘digest’ some big news. Our stomach is sometimes dubbed the ‘second brain’ and it's more than just a metaphor. The term gained traction in the West in 1999, thanks to Dr. Michael Gershon’s book “The Second Brain.” However, the concept isn’t new. Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient Indian healing system, has recognized the gut-brain connection for thousands of years. In Ayurveda, the digestive system and the mind are intertwined; a disturbance in one affects the other. This link is embodied in the concept of Agni, or ‘digestive fire,’ which pertains to both physical digestion and the processing of emotions and thoughts. Nourishing our Agni with the right foods can make us feel better, both physically and mentally. Where did this idea originate? Is there scientific backing for this brain-gut connection? Apr 24, 20245 minToday we're going to talk about a 35-year-old American man who's taken an unconventional approach to his country's upcoming presidential election. Dustin Ebey, as he used to be known, is a maths teacher and military veteran from Dallas, Texas. And lately, he's been stirring up quite the buzz. That's because he went and changed his name to "Literally Anybody Else", as a bold statement against American politics and its two-party system in particular. What prompted Ebey’s name change? Apr 24, 20245 minCaring for yourself involves more than just tending to your nails; it's about making sure they're well-groomed, especially those on your toes. Trimming them properly is also key to avoiding painful ingrown nails, but on the other hand going overboard with your clippers can cause problems too. So let’s discuss how to find the right middle ground. According to the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the best tool for the job is either nail clippers, which are lever-style cutters, or nippers, which have more of a plier style. It may be easiest to cut your nails after you’ve had a bath, shower, or footbath, as they’lll be slightly softer as a result. What’s the best cutting technique then? What is the 12 week method for achieving your goals?
Apr 23, 20244 minEvery January, many of us set ambitious resolutions for the year ahead. We jot down our aspirations, fueled by goodwill, and promise ourselves that this time, we won’t give up after just a month. But somehow, as the year unfolds, our motivation wanes, and those once-clear goals seem increasingly elusive. If you’re tired of this cycle, it might be time to consider a fresh approach: the twelve-week method. Imagine achieving all your goals within just three months. Sounds challenging, right? But fear not! The Twelve-Week Method, also known as the “Twelve-Week Year,” emerged from a personal development book published in 2013 by American entrepreneurs Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington. Drawing on their experience as managers in major international companies, they designed this method to boost productivity while preventing burnout during periods of low motivation. Apr 22, 20244 minCoffee purists tend to look down on the likes of the latte, cappuccino and mocha, suggesting that only black coffee is the real deal. They often double down by saying that drinking coffee with milk causes bloating and messes with digestion. Which foods will help you get a good night's sleep?
Apr 20, 20245 minHere at Do You Really Know, we’ve talked over and over again about the importance of getting good quality sleep. So of course, you don’t want your evening meal to disrupt it, and that’s a cause of uncertainty for many people. Bear in mind that to drift off to sleep, your body temperature needs to gradually drop. Given that digestion tends to raise our body temperature, that poses quite the conundrum. Now, the richer the meal or the heavier the food you eat, the longer it takes to be digested, which can lead to discomfort like reflux, heaviness, or bloating. I’ve often heard that a light dinner is best - is that a good starting point? So what kind of foods should we be aiming for then? What about drinks then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Could the five-minute coffee check-in save your relationship?
Apr 19, 20245 minFeeling disconnected from a partner is a common problem in romantic relationships. According to a survey by McCain Foods in 2018, it affects 60% of all people in a relationship. Even worse, 15% of respondents admitted to spending more time interacting with celebrities on social media than with their partner. This sense of disconnection often stems from a lack of communication within the relationship. So today we’re going to tell you about a technique that may just help in that respect: the “five-minute coffee check-in”. Indeed Aston Simmonds, the Australian relationship coach who created it, credited it with saving her from divorce. What exactly does the "coffee check-in" entail? How often should my partner and I be having coffee check-ins then? Does the coffee check-in really work then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! What is quiet hiring?
Apr 18, 20244 minAfter the emergence of ‘quiet quitting’, it's now the turn of quiet hiring. And although the term is relatively new, the practice is not. The term "quiet hiring" first appeared in the report "9 Future of Work Trends for 2023" published at the end of 2022 by Emily McRae, a philosophy professor in New Mexico, USA. She explains that this phenomenon follows on from the quiet quitting craze that emerged in 2021 after the Covid-19 pandemic which saw a huge wave of resignations sweep the country with nearly 4 million people quitting their jobs every month during this period. Quiet quitters complain that their workload was too heavy for their salary and that Managers were unclear about their tasks or workload, rewarding best performance and thus pushing them to work more.
