About this video

In this deeply personal talk, Derek Nelson reflects on how loss can teach us powerful lessons. His story reveals how gratitude can live alongside sorrow, how overcoming does not mean erasing pain, and how true resilience is built moment by moment. Derek’s message ultimately points us towards living every day as if it truly matters. Derek is on a quest to become the best version of himself while helping others do the same. A former pediatric bedside nurse and Ironman triathlon finisher, he has spent over 20 years as a professional sales executive and entrepreneur. He holds a Bachelor of Nursing and an MBA from the University of Utah, credentials that reflect his unique blend of heart-led service and strategic leadership. Today, as the owner of Best Self Systems, LLC, Derek focuses on the valuable lessons found in life’s most challenging transitions. Living in Kaysville, Utah, he is most at home hiking or cycling in the nearby mountains. Above all, he treasures his roles as a husband, friend, and dad. Derek believes that by acknowledging the beauty in our past, we can bring more honour and presence to our "right now." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
