What's Under the Street in NYC?

This fall, the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) invited us to visit one of their work sites in lower Manhattan. They took us into a massive hole that disrupted a busy intersection downtown and pointed out the different pipes, sewers, and cables that are usually buried below the surface of the road. More than anything, visiting this construction site and hearing from the folks at the DDC helped us appreciate just how MUCH is stuffed under the streets of New York City. I grew up in New York City and for my entire life, I was warned that swimming in the East River is a dangerous and bad idea. But recently, I've been wondering if that common warning is true, or if it's a myth repeated by New Yorkers. In this video, we went on a journey to uncover the truth around the safety of New York City's waterways, and along the way we met incredible New Yorkers who are working to make access to safe and clean swimming areas around the city possible. The New York City mayoral primary is one of the most important elections of the year. Local elections impact all of our daily lives, so it’s crucial to stay informed and to get out and vote. NYC's Last Horse Racing Track Is Closing Forever

We visited a hidden New York City gem, the Aqueduct Race Track located in Queens. While we were there, we learned about why people have been visiting the track for over 100 years to watch horses race and to spend time with friends. We were blown away by our experience, and were surprised by the level of positivity and community that we felt inside of the building. There are many interesting facets of the Aqueduct Race Track from its history, to betting on races, to the sport itself. The track will be closing in 2026, so we wanted to capture its personality and learn about why the NYC institution has stood for so long. We Traced NYC’s 30-Year Water Problem to the Source

The tunnel that supplies half of NYC’s drinking water is leaking, and we got to go 700 feet underground to check it out. The Delaware Aqueduct is the longest tunnel in the world, and it’s been leaking 30 million gallons a day for decades. The problem took 30 years to solve, and the repair isn’t over. Why is the world’s greatest piano factory here?

Ever wondered how a piano is made? We recently had the opportunity to visit the Steinway & Sons piano factory, where they have been handcrafting world-class pianos since the 1870s. We spoke with the dedicated craftspeople and artisans who shape, tune, and perfect these instruments by hand—many of whom have been working at Steinway for decades. It was incredible to get a first hand look at the making of a Steinway Piano.
