Iran and US announce peace deal - Trump lifts blockade of strait of Hormuz | BBC News
Jun 14, 2026
Iran and the US have confirmed they have agreed a peace deal. US President Donald Trump has said the strait of Hormuz will be reopened and has ordered a lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. The deal is expected to be signed in Switzerland on Friday. Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete... I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade," he says. "Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!" Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed on state TV that a deal with the US has been finalised and the official signing will take place in Switzerland on Friday. "An immediate and permanent end to the war and military operations on different fronts including Lebanon will be announced tonight," he said, stating that the US naval blockade against Iran would be lifted immediately. Pakistan first announced that the US and Iran have reached peace deal to end military operations. Pakistan has played a key role as an intermediary between the two sides in peace talks. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that both sides had declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However the Israeli military operations has been continuing against Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Iran has said that an end to that offensive is a condition for any deal, raising question about the sustainability of the agreement. Details of what the agreement says regarding other key issues in dispute are not yet clear. One such issues is future control of the strait of Hormuz, the key shipping lane through which around a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas passes. Another contentious issue is the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, including the enrichment of uranium. Iran has insisted that the programme will continue, while the US had demanded that it is completely abandoned. Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jeremy Bowen. Is this AI's moment of truth? | BBC News
Jun 13, 2026
A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy. Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable. At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause. And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism. So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance? AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ' The Plain Bagel'. Iran-US peace deal has been agreed says Pakistan’s Prime Minister | BBC News
Jun 12, 2026
A “final, agreed upon text of the peace deal has been reached” between the US and Iran, according to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Pakistan has been playing a leading role in negotiations between the two countries. Sharif made the statement in a post on social media. It came as officials in the US and Iran warned against trusting reports setting out the details of a possible agreement. Iran’s foreign minister said that Abbas Araghchi earlier stated that a deal had “never been closer” , while all warning that the “media should refrain from speculation about its content”. US President Donald Trump reposted Araghchi's statement, which also asked the media not to speculate about the content of the deal. Iranian media have published details of the alleged deal, prompting Trump to say they had "nothing to do with the terms that were agreed to" and "bears no relation to the truth". Trump accused Tehran of leaking the details and added that they were "very dishonourable people to deal with". Speculation has centred on the terms of any deal regarding control over the strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran has insisted that it will retain control over the key shipping lane and has rejected US demands to abandon it nuclear enrichment programme. The US says Iran’s nuclear material will be destroyed and removed from the country. A day earlier the US president said he had cancelled "scheduled attacks" against Iran, because negotiators had "just made a great settlement" - a deal that was likely be to signed imminently. The battle in rural America against AI data centres | BBC Americast
Jun 12, 2026
Will opposition to data centres remake the political landscape in America? These enormous buildings are being built to house the computers that process and store the huge amounts of data that AI companies work with. But in places such as Utah, where a 62 square mile data centre has been approved, voters are voicing their concerns. These concerns range from the environmental impact; the effect on property prices and electricity costs; the constant noise and the aesthetic impact of these enormous buildings on the landscape. This opposition is bi-partisan - affecting both Democrat and Republican voting areas and politicians in Washington have started to take note. Democrat Senator Bernie Sanders has sponsored a bill calling for the immediate moratorium on the building of new data centres, arguing that the federal government needs time to better regulate the AI industry. In this episode, Anthony and Justin discuss whether this issue has the potential to impact the crucial Mid Term elections in November. And we hear from energy journalist Robert Bryce who has been tracking these protests across the United States and ask, are American voters turning against Big Tech? Trump claims deal to end Iran war near, but Tehran says 'nothing' finalised | BBC News
Jun 12, 2026
Iran has insisted that a final decision on an agreement to end the current conflict with the US has not yet been reached, despite President Donald Trump again claiming a deal was likely to be signed imminently. President Trump had declared the US would strike Iran "very hard" again on Thursday, but later said he was cancelling the strikes because negotiators had "just made a great settlement" with Iran. He told reporters it was "subject to finalisation of documents, which should get done, over the next few days" and that there would "probably" be a signing ceremony in Europe. But Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said reports of an agreement were "speculative" and "nothing has been finalised". Trump has previously claimed a deal with Iran was close without one materialising. #DonaldTrump #US #Iran #BBCNews Subscribe to our channel here: https://bbc.in/bbcnews For the latest news download the BBC News app or visit BBC.com/news #DonaldTrump #US #Iran #BBCNews

Jun 12, 2026
The 2026 World Cup kicked off last night in Mexico, after a series of controversies in the lead up, including over visas for foreign teams, fans, media and officials hoping to go to the host countries: US, Canada and Mexico. US and Iran exchange strikes across Middle East for second day in a row | BBC News
Jun 11, 2026
The US and Iran have exchanged strikes across the Middle East for a second consecutive day, further straining a shaky ceasefire agreed between the two countries in April. US Central Command said it had completed a wave of "self-defense strikes" targeting military, surveillance and radar sites in southern Iran, hours after President Donald Trump vowed US forces would hit Iran "hard". Tehran responded to the attack with a round of strikes targeting US military assets across the region in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. Iran's foreign ministry said early on Thursday that the overnight attacks violated the two-month-old ceasefire, rendering it "practically meaningless". The furious dispute over what caused Air India flight 171 to crash | BBC News
Jun 11, 2026
On 12 June 2025, a London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad in western India, killing at least 260 people, including 241 passengers and crew on board. Investigators have yet to publish their final findings into the cause of the crash. A preliminary report into the incident from India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau found both of the plane's fuel switches moved to the "cut-off" position "immediately" after take-off, stopping fuel supply to the engine. What is not clear however, is what actually caused the crash.
