This fall, the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) invited us to visit one of their work sites in lower Manhattan. They took us into a massive hole that disrupted a busy intersection downtown and pointed out the different pipes, sewers, and cables that are usually buried below the surface of the road. More than anything, visiting this construction site and hearing from the folks at the DDC helped us appreciate just how MUCH is stuffed under the streets of New York City.
