Mass Collective is a creative cohort of four professional architectural photographers. This year they launched their inaugural mentorship scheme – an education programme for young people aged 20–30, supporting emerging talent from underrepresented backgrounds and championing new voices in architectural photography. The Modern House were keen to get practically involved in the scheme so, together with the architectural photographer Rachel Ferriman, we hosted a photography workshop at Pheasants, a home we recently sold. An exhibition of new perspectives on architectural photography showcasing work produced by this year’s mentees will take place between 28th May and 1st June at Art Forward Gallery, 12–14 Whitfield St, London W1T 2RF. The mentees’ work will also feature in a zine (£10), which is available for pre-order via the Mass Collective shop. https://www.mass-collective.com/ https://www.rachelferriman.com/ Film by Gene Limbrick, Tom Sandford and Gianluca Giordimaina Produced by The Modern House CHAPTERS 00:09 Introduction to Mass Collective 00:16 The aim of Mass Mentorship 00:36 Introduction to architectural photographer, Rachel Ferriman 00:59 Interview with mentee Justine Sauri White 01:23 Interview with mentee Mark Woulfe 01:37 Interview with mentee Takenya K Holness 01:52 Interview with mentee Iman Dagnoko 02:00 Rachel's brief to the mentees 02:13 What has interested the mentees most about Pheasants 03:11 Giving the mentees a chance to overcome challenges in a safe environment 03:37 What have the mentees learned from the scheme 04:38 The importance of diversity in image making 05:00 What Mass Mentorship is working towards 05:12 Rachel's experience of the day Never miss a new film, subscribe here: https://bit.ly/36I7z8y Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themodernhouse/ & https://www.instagram.com/inigo.house/ Selling design-led homes in the UK: https://www.themodernhouse.com Selling historic homes in the UK: https://www.inigo.com/ Like us on Facebook: https://bit.ly/34BKO3x & https://www.facebook.com/inigo.house Home and interior inspiration, delivered to your inbox: https://www.themodernhouse.com/newsletter/ & https://www.inigo.com/#newsletter/ Listen to our latest podcast, How My Garden Grows: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/how-my-garden-grows/id1837703535 Best interiors Instagram accounts (Vogue) Best homes accounts (Guardian) Ultimate interiors accounts (Telegraph)

>> MASS is a collective of photographers. We uh document the built environment. We are trying to really diversify the industry and trying to introduce new people, new faces, new opinions into what architectural photography is.

So, our mentorship program is about championing young people from underrepresented backgrounds and getting them into the architectural photography industry or the wider creative We're working with Rachel Ferriman, who's worked a lot with The Modern House and built some incredible portfolio working with them.

She's worked I think over a decade in the industry and she's, you know, in that time been a personal friend to us. What MASS Collective do is absolutely brilliant. Over the years, they've really created a community of And

with the mentorship scheme, they've made something really special. I've always been fascinated by the built environment. Whenever I traveled somewhere near, I was like, "Why is this city designed like this?" And so, I started taking photographs of these spaces that I found myself in and

that I found personally really fascinating and trying to, >> well, document essentially people's interactions within these spaces. While I love architecture, I realized my favorite part of it wasn't the detailing or the construction. It was more the overall idea um of a building

and like the conceptual kind of um ideas or framework behind it. I think I've always been interested in people and space, and I thought architectural photography would be a good way to combine my two interests and investigate how cultural identity

um influences space. I've always been drawn to how places evolve across time. Kind of like finding or forming a record. The way Rachel I briefed them is really smart and I really gave them the context they needed to understand

like how to document a project like this in a commercial way and also from that personal point of view. I have been particularly interested in how Fezandipandi's perhaps locally sourced and on-site construction methods, particularly for the steel staircase. I found that very fascinating.

Well, it's such a special special building in general. I guess what I find most interesting about it is maybe the contrast between the structure and the windows. And so I'm trying to look at that um those parts where they meet, where the solids and the gaps

meet. I think the void, the play with negative space in the house. I Yeah, I quite like the volumetric study that has been done.

because at first when you I don't know, when you first look at the house it looks like this block. But then you come in and then there are moments um in which you have nature that is incorporated through some voids.

Things rarely go exactly to plan, but they you know, have this chance to fail in a safe environment and face challenges and learn how to overcome them. So that's always been something that I think is, you know, we really enjoyed seeing them overcome and work through

in the course. I think for me coming from a background where I have no experience in the architectural world, >> I think all I can hope for is that I leave more knowledgeable about the space, which already I feel like I've learned

so much about the space, people in the space, the industry, and um what it takes to be an architectural photographer. I've really had the opportunity to kind of dive straight in and really focus in my practice and what that

means. Um just having that excuse to go out and take photos. >> The highlight of course has been to be able to talk to working and get to pick their brains to

understand stuff that you just would take so long to figure out yourself. I think it's been very interesting, very challenging. I think it's helped me grow as a photographer, as a person, and definitely in the practice of architectural photography.
