Dr. Stephanie Estima, a women's health expert with 20 years of clinical practice, says sprinting is the one exercise that everybody, regardless of age or gender, should never stop doing. She walks through the data. A study took women with an average age of 58 and put them on a sprinting protocol. In just 8 weeks, they increased their VO2 max by 10%. When researchers compared their results to 18-to-30-year-olds doing the same protocol, the older group actually showed greater mitochondrial efficiency improvements: 69% versus 49% for the younger group. For people who can't sprint outdoors, she demonstrates the Norwegian 4x4: four minutes at 85 to 95% of your maximum heart rate on a bike, treadmill, or any cardio machine, followed by three minutes of rest, repeated four times. She says she hates it until the moment she starts, and then feels proud of herself every single time.
