Temperatures broke June records in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands on Friday as the death toll from Europe's heatwave climbed in Spain and France and authorities cancelled concerts and other public events because of health risks. Germany's highest ever temperature of 41.3C was recorded provisionally in the south-western city of Saarbrücken, just over the border from France, which this week endured its hottest temperatures three days in a row. Although France's heatwave has peaked, its health minister said the "emergence of deaths at home" was of particular concern. The World Meteorological Organization warned of "major impacts" to health, ecosystems, agriculture and labour. At least 150 million people across the European continent were facing temperatures higher than 35C on Friday, according to calculations by the AFP news agency. Now, let's turn to the heat. Much of Europe continues to swelter under that extreme heat wave. German weather service has recorded temperatures exceeding 41° on Friday. France, music festivals, street parties, including Paris Pride, had to

be canceled. And the sale and public consumption of alcohol in the French capital is being limited. The Netherlands, well, there public transport in the southeast of the country had to be partially suspended because electric buses

could not be charged and for the first time in its history, the Dutch weather service issued a red alert because of the heat. Well, I'm very pleased to say we're joined by our weather presenter, Elizabeth Rizzini, who's been monitoring with this for

us. I mean, we've been seeing this sweep across from the UK and to western France. What's it doing now? >> Uh well, actually, the heat cache is now moving further

eastwards. So, um originally, there were there were red alerts out for western France, you know, Bordeaux saw its hottest day on record, not just for June, but on record. Um the heat has been moving further eastwards across to

central and eastern areas of Europe, and we find red alerts today across central and eastern areas of France, uh Switzerland, Austria, um into Poland, Germany still, and down through places like Croatia and Hungary as well. So, the heat is gradually sweeping a little further eastwards

as that area of high pressure moves east as well. >> How high are these temperatures compared to what you would normally expect at this time? >> Well, they're around 15° C above the average as they have been here as well across the UK.

Um but of course, the heat the heat's just been it's been exceptional. We We're We're not used to these temperatures, particularly in June. I mean, this would be an exceptional spell of heat

if it was in July or August, but the fact that it's happening in June doesn't bode well for the rest of the summer. And all over Europe, June records have been smashed and actually provisionally, it could be that that German record is

the is the highest temperature that's ever been recorded, not just in June, but throughout the summer in Germany, that 41.3. And that's all still got to be confirmed, but yeah, so much heat going on at the moment across Europe.

But, it's now started to cool down a little across western areas of France and across the Iberian Peninsula as well. So, temperatures aren't quite as searingly hot as they as they were earlier on through the week.

>> And we hear about this this heat dome, which kind of the high pressure then traps the hot air and it doesn't escape. Is that kind of one of the reasons why we're experiencing this so >> Uh yes, that's absolutely correct.

So, there's an area of high pressure and it's just towards the east of the UK at the moment. So, we're drawing in the southeasterly wind, that's part of the problem. So, the air is coming from the south, but what

happens is as air sinks, then it becomes compressed and it heats even further. So, there's been a lot of sunshine across Europe, across the UK as well. And and of course, that's just added to the temperature.

So, the heat can't radiate away by night and we've experienced some very warm nights as well, not just in the UK, but all over Europe. And and so, the heat's got nowhere to escape and it's just going nowhere.

Temperatures remaining in the high 30s, you know, the low 40s, too, for some. >> Elizabeth, thank you so much for talking us through that. Elizabeth Rizzini there from the BBC Weather Centre. Thank you for keeping an eye on that and just
