Privacy Policy
Effective Date: 31 May 2026
This policy explains what data Clue ("we", "us", "the App") collects when you use the Clue iOS app and the tryclue.app website, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Clue you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information We Collect
a. Account information
You create a Clue account by signing in with Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. We do not run a separate password-based sign-up. From the chosen provider we receive:
- A unique account identifier
- The email address you authorize the provider to share (this may be a relay address when you use Apple's "Hide My Email")
- The display name you authorize the provider to share, when available
We do not receive or store your sign-in password.
b. Learning data
To make the app work — sync your library across devices, remember what you've read or listened to, and power the spaced-repetition memory feature — we store:
- Saved words and their translations, with review history
- Listening, reading, and viewing progress on content in your library
- App preferences (interface language, learning language, level)
c. Content you add
Clue lets you add your own content to the library:
- Public content (podcasts, YouTube channels and videos). When you add a podcast or YouTube link, it becomes part of Clue's shared catalog so other users can discover and learn from it too. The metadata we keep is the public information already published by the source (title, author/channel, description, cover/thumbnail, episodes). We do not record which individual user added a given public item.
- Private content (books and other files you upload). Files you upload as books are stored privately in your library, visible only to you. You can delete any book from your library at any time, which removes the file from our storage.
d. Subscription information
Clue offers optional paid subscriptions through Apple's In-App Purchase. Apple handles all billing. We do not see or store your payment details. We do receive from Apple the status of your subscription (active, expired, in trial) so the app can unlock the right features.
e. Device and diagnostic data
To keep the app stable we may collect basic technical information such as iOS version, device model, app version, and anonymous crash reports. This data is not used to identify you personally.
f. Website analytics
The tryclue.app website uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages visitors engage with. The analytics provider receives standard request data (IP address, user agent, page URL) and a cookie or local identifier for session continuity. No account information from the app is sent to website analytics.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Provide and operate the app: authenticate you, sync your library, remember progress, run the memory and translation features.
- Improve the product: fix bugs, measure which features are used, prioritize what to build next.
- Communicate with you when you contact us (e.g. by email).
- Comply with legal obligations and protect Clue and its users from abuse.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your learning data or uploaded files for advertising.
3. Third Parties We Rely On
To operate Clue we use a small number of trusted service providers:
- Apple Inc. — Sign in with Apple, App Store distribution, In-App Purchase billing, push notifications, crash reporting.
- Google LLC — Sign in with Google, and Google Analytics for the website.
- Cloud infrastructure providers — for hosting the backend that stores your account, library, and private uploads.
Each provider only receives the data it needs to deliver its service to us. We do not share your personal data with any third party for their own marketing.
4. How Long We Keep Your Data
- Account and learning data: kept while your account exists.
- Private uploads (books): kept until you delete them or delete your account.
- Public additions (podcasts, YouTube): remain in the catalog as part of Clue's content library, since they are already public information published elsewhere.
- Diagnostic data: retained only as long as needed for stability work.
5. Your Choices and Rights
- Access your data. The app surfaces your library and progress directly. You can request a copy of other personal data we hold by emailing us.
- Delete content. You can delete any private book from your library inside the app at any time.
- Delete your account. You can request account deletion by emailing hello@tryclue.app. We will remove your account, your learning data, and your private uploads. Public catalog items you contributed remain available.
- Revoke sign-in access. You can revoke Clue's access to your Apple ID or Google account in your provider settings at any time.
Depending on where you live (e.g. EEA, UK, California), you may have additional rights such as the right to object to processing or to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
6. Security
We use industry-standard measures — encrypted connections (HTTPS), authenticated APIs, and access controls — to protect your data. No internet service is perfectly secure; we recommend you also protect the device where Clue is installed with a passcode or biometric lock.
7. Children
Clue is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
8. International Transfers
Clue is operated from our headquarters and uses cloud providers that may store and process data in other countries. By using the app you understand that your data may be processed in jurisdictions whose privacy laws differ from your own. We rely on the provider's standard safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable) for international transfers.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy. When we do, we will update the "Effective Date" above. If the change is material, we will surface it in the app or by email. Continued use of Clue after the update means you accept the revised policy.
