Inside Elon Musk's empire | BBC Americast
19 июн. 2026 г.
The US economy backs Elon Musk’s vision for sending people to Mars, the moon and beyond with SpaceX. Elon Musk’s rocket, telecommunications and artificial intelligence company SpaceX has listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange with a value of $2.2 trillion; making him the world’s first trillionaire in the process. Other AI companies, including Open AI and Anthropic have plans to follow suit but what does that mean for the US economy and global financial stability? In this episode, Justin speaks to Ryan Mac - an investigative technology reporter for the New York Times who has extensive experience covering Elon Musk and other leaders in the AI field. SpaceX’s public valuation has made millionaires of many of its past and current employees and generated around $85 billion for the company; money that Elon Musk says is essential to fulfil the company’s plans to build bases on the Moon, put data centres into orbit and send human beings to Mars. But what happens if those plans remain unfulfilled? As more companies offer shares to investors and the general public, Justin and Ryan explore whether America is gambling on the promise of AI? And is the US economy becoming dangerously reliant on one industry? 00:00 Intro 00:55 What does it mean to be a trillionaire? 01:41 SpaceX’s stock market debut 05:21 Why investors rushed to buy SpaceX shares 10:09 Why Elon Musk divides opinion 12:08 The promises Musk has and hasn’t delivered 22:03 What happens if the AI boom slows down? 27:20 Outro Subscribe to our channel here: https://bbc.in/bbcnews For the latest news download the BBC News app or visit BBC.com/news #BBCNews

JD Vance warns Israel over opposition to US-Iran peace deal | BBC News
18 июн. 2026 г.
The US vice president JD Vance has criticised Israel over opposition to the US peace deal with Iran, saying: “You can’t just kill your way out of solving every single national security problem that you have”. Israels has pushed the US to continue the war with Iran, and its assault on Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon, who are backed by Iran, risks destabilising the peace plan. The presidents of the US and Iran have signed an initial peace deal aiming to end the war, allowing it to immediately take effect. The agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a $300bn plan for Iran's "reconstruction", and the US terminating "all types of sanctions" on Iran. But the issue of Iran's nuclear programme, the main reason stated by the US for the conflict, is still to be negotiated over an extendable 60-day period. US President Donald Trump, who signed the deal in France during the G7 summit, defended the proposal, saying it would stave off an "economic catastrophe". He warned, though, that the US would "bomb the hell" out of Iran if no final deal emerged. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also signed the document on Wednesday, Tehran confirmed. Iran's parliamentary speaker and key negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told state media his distrust of the US remained. He said Iran's "finger is on the trigger" and "If the enemy does not understand the language of logic, we will enter again with the language of power”. Trump told reporters in France at the lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains, where the G7 summit took place, that the plan would avert "worldwide depression". The vaccine preventing the deadly cancer, HPV | BBC News
18 июн. 2026 г.
Children vaccinated at age 12–13 against HPV (human papillomavirus) have close to zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before the age of 30, landmark new research has revealed. The first study of its kind shows deaths have fallen sharply since school-age girls began being offered it in 2008, and around 200 lives have been saved in England so far thanks to the vaccine. Between 2020 and 2024, no cervical cancer deaths were recorded in women aged 20 to 24 - the first time that had happened over a five-year period. Steve Rosenberg inside Putin's economic forum | BBC News

Ukrainian drone attacks cast a dark cloud over Vladimir Putin’s annual international economic forum in St Petersburg earlier in June. The event, once seen as Russia’s answer to the World Economic Forum in Davos, traditionally brings together foreign investors and members of Russia’s political and business elites. This year only a handful of Western representatives were in attendance, including controversial figures such as right-wing influencer Candace Owens. The BBC’s Russia Editor, Steve Rosenberg, reports from inside the forum as the effects of Ukraine’s drone attacks and Russia’s strained war economy are already being felt. Ebola mourners learn how to grieve safely after outbreak in DR Congo | BBC News
18 июн. 2026 г.
Mourners in DR Congo are learning how to grieve safely, as large traditional funerals are scrapped in a bid to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus. The outbreak has so far killed almost 200 people in the last few months, mainly in the province of Ituri of which Bunia is the capital. Ebola is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids and stringent protocols have to be followed to stop it spreading - including safe burials. One traditional practice that is now strongly discouraged is the washing of dead bodies by family members before burial. Iran and US announce peace deal - Trump lifts blockade of strait of Hormuz | BBC News
14 июн. 2026 г.
Iran and the US have confirmed they have agreed a peace deal. US President Donald Trump has said the strait of Hormuz will be reopened and has ordered a lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. The deal is expected to be signed in Switzerland on Friday. Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete... I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade," he says. "Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!" Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed on state TV that a deal with the US has been finalised and the official signing will take place in Switzerland on Friday. "An immediate and permanent end to the war and military operations on different fronts including Lebanon will be announced tonight," he said, stating that the US naval blockade against Iran would be lifted immediately. Pakistan first announced that the US and Iran have reached peace deal to end military operations. Pakistan has played a key role as an intermediary between the two sides in peace talks. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that both sides had declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. However the Israeli military operations has been continuing against Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Iran has said that an end to that offensive is a condition for any deal, raising question about the sustainability of the agreement. Details of what the agreement says regarding other key issues in dispute are not yet clear. One such issues is future control of the strait of Hormuz, the key shipping lane through which around a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas passes. Another contentious issue is the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, including the enrichment of uranium. Iran has insisted that the programme will continue, while the US had demanded that it is completely abandoned. Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jeremy Bowen. Is this AI's moment of truth? | BBC News
13 июн. 2026 г.
A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy. Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable. At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause. And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism. So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance? Iran-US peace deal has been agreed says Pakistan’s Prime Minister | BBC News
12 июн. 2026 г.
A “final, agreed upon text of the peace deal has been reached” between the US and Iran, according to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Pakistan has been playing a leading role in negotiations between the two countries. Sharif made the statement in a post on social media. It came as officials in the US and Iran warned against trusting reports setting out the details of a possible agreement. Iran’s foreign minister said that Abbas Araghchi earlier stated that a deal had “never been closer” , while all warning that the “media should refrain from speculation about its content”. US President Donald Trump reposted Araghchi's statement, which also asked the media not to speculate about the content of the deal. Iranian media have published details of the alleged deal, prompting Trump to say they had "nothing to do with the terms that were agreed to" and "bears no relation to the truth". Trump accused Tehran of leaking the details and added that they were "very dishonourable people to deal with". Speculation has centred on the terms of any deal regarding control over the strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran has insisted that it will retain control over the key shipping lane and has rejected US demands to abandon it nuclear enrichment programme. The US says Iran’s nuclear material will be destroyed and removed from the country. A day earlier the US president said he had cancelled "scheduled attacks" against Iran, because negotiators had "just made a great settlement" - a deal that was likely be to signed imminently.
