Victims "trapped in cars" while fleeing Spain’s deadly wildfires | BBC News
10. Juli 2026
At least 12 people have been killed and 23 others are missing in wildfires in southern Spain that emergency workers are battling to contain. Hundreds of firefighters are trying to extinguish the blaze in Almeria. Andalusia's health and emergencies minister, Antonio Sanz, said it is the "most devastating fire" the region has ever seen, saying the majority, or even all of the victims may have been foreign nationals. Four of those killed were trapped inside a car, Sanz said, adding that they are believed to be British. Families have been speaking of fleeing for their lives with their children, as the flames spread in hot, dry conditions. Lucinda Curtois who was visiting Spain with her partner and teenage children, said: "Within 15 minutes there was a tiny bit of haze, to black smoke, to flames… it was really frightening and unbelievably quick." A sustained heatwave with temperatures of around 40C has caused wildfires across Southern Europe this summer. Firefighters have battled major incidents in France, Portugal and Spain, with thousands forced to leave their homes. Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Nick Beake. Donald Trump says ceasefire is over but US will continue talks with Tehran | BBC News
10. Juli 2026
US President Donald Trump has posted on social media that the US has agreed to a request from Tehran to continue talks, but the ceasefire is over. After 48 hours of hostilities earlier this week, there's been no new strikes as of Friday, but Trump's warning shows the situation remains volatile. Shipping traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz has once again slowed to a trickle, and this week's hostilities means that the United Nations has suspended its plan to evacuate trapped vessels in the Strait. Meanwhile, in Iran six days of public mourning has ended with the burial of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Could Iran strikes hurt US-Gulf alliances? | Global News Podcast
10. Juli 2026
The renewed strikes between the US and Iran this week have put Gulf countries back in the firing line. The latest escalation was sparked when Iran's Islamic Revoluationary Guard (IRGC) targeted three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz - including Saudi and Qatar-owned oil and gas tankers. The US retaliated with dozens of strikes on Iran. Tehran now says it has responded by targeting US-linked sites in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan and Iraq. So what do the Gulf's leaders make of this escalation? What role was set out for them in the Memorandum of Understanding anounced by President Donald Trump last month? Hundreds of residents evacuated after deadly wildfires in Spain | BBC News
10. Juli 2026
At least 12 people have died in a wildfire in southern Spain, with early indications suggesting four of the victims are British, according to a local official. Hundreds of emergency responders are working to contain the blaze around Los Gallardos, Almería, which appears to have been caused by a downed power line. The bodies of the victims were found near the small village of Bédar, just outside Los Gallardos, while 23 others are still missing and hundreds of residents have been evacuated. Regional president Juanma Moreno calls the impact of the fire "devastating" and warns the death toll could rise significantly. The Battle for Charlie Kirk's Legacy | BBC Americast
10. Juli 2026
After Charlie Kirk’s death, will young people still vote Republican, and could the battle for his legacy cost Donald Trump crucial votes in this year’s midterm elections? This week marks the start of hearings which will determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence to bring a murder case against Kirk’s alleged killer, Tyler Robinson. The hearings have once again highlighted Charlie Kirk’s influence on young people and the battle among some Republicans to secure his legacy. His death remains the subject of conspiracy theories among prominent far-right influencers such as Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens while candidates in this year’s midterm elections have used his endorsement in campaign ads. But alongside this is also an administration that is increasingly unpopular with young people who voted for Trump in part to deal with cost-of-living pressures and a desire for no more wars. Can the Republican Party keep hold of the voters that Charlie Kirk helped deliver, and where will they go if they don’t vote for the party? US and Iran trade attacks as Iran's late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is buried | BBC News
10. Juli 2026
The US and Iran again traded strikes in exchanges that continued into Thursday, as observers reported a "dramatic" drop in the number of ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz. The US says it hit 90 military targets, some near the Strait. Iran says 14 people have been killed in the past two days. State media also reported that targets near the Bushehr nuclear power plant were hit, citing the deputy governor of the province. The US has not commented on the latest strikes. Iran said it targeted US assets in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar in response. Later on Thursday, Tehran launched more strikes on sites in Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq, state-linked media reported. Separately, huge crowds gathered as Iran's late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was buried after six days of funeral events. The "body of the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution was buried in the memorial hall of the shrine of Imam Reza," state broadcaster IRIB reported, according to AFP. Farming to survive after two years of war | BBC News
10. Juli 2026
Two years of conflict have devastated Gaza's infrastructure and its ability to feed itself. With food supplies unreliable and prices soaring, many Gazans have turned to urban farming - planting on rooftops, in home gardens, and next to tents. At the heart of this struggle is a small seed bank run by Salama Mhanna and his daughter Hanadi. Originally started in 2017 to preserve local crop varieties, their project was destroyed during the fighting in 2024. Now operating from a tent, they are starting again to provide farmers with the seeds they need to survive. Jackdaw boss warns of winter fuel shortage risk if North Sea gas field not approved | BBC News
9. Juli 2026
The owners of the Jackdaw gas platform in the North Sea say it is "hyper critical" that the UK government approves production to avoid the risk of domestic supply shortages this winter. Speaking to BBC News at the field 150 miles east of Aberdeen, Adura chief executive Neil McCulloch said the project was in its final stages and could meet 6% of the UK's gas from 1 October. The industry regulator is considering revised applications for production at Jackdaw, and Adura's Rosebank oil field west of Shetland, after a court ruled that both had been unlawfully approved. Environmental campaigners say this summer's deadly and record-breaking heatwaves demonstrate the need to tackle climate change by rejecting both projects. Andy Burnham (Almost) Wins | BBC Newscast
9. Juli 2026
Today, Andy Burnham's Labour leadership bid has been backed by 322 Labour MPs. If no one else enters the contest, as expected, Burnham will be declared Labour leader next week before taking office as prime minister on 20 July. Burnham is currently just one short of securing 323 nominations, which is when it is mathematically impossible for a rival to reach the 81-MP threshold needed to run against him. Adam and Chris discuss. An interim review of Personal Independence Payments (Pip) in England and Wales had found it to be "not fit for purpose". US and Iran ramp up strikes as shaky ceasefire hangs in the balance | BBC News
9. Juli 2026
Iran has launched fresh strikes on US targets today, following a second night of strikes between the two countries last night. The US military says it struck around 90 Iranian targets on Wednesday night, and more than 80 the night before. Sirens sounded in Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Iraq as a result of the Iranian drone and missile strikes. Meanwhile, the final day of public mourning for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has taken place while strikes have been exchanged. Man behind Gaza's World Cup screenings killed in Israeli strike | BBC News
9. Juli 2026
A Palestinian aid worker who organised Gaza's World Cup screenings was killed in an Israeli strike just before Egypt played Argentina on Tuesday. Mohammed al-Wahidi spent years supporting families in Gaza, working as the director of the Egyptian Committee in Gaza. About an hour before the game began, an Israeli missile struck the taxi he was travelling in. He was killed alongside two brothers aged eight and 10, who were walking home after playing football, and another man who was caught nearby. The Israeli military’s response is that Mohammed al-Wahidi was not the intended target - and that the strike was aimed at a Hamas militant. It says it is reviewing what happened and regrets harm to civilians. Mohammed’s family says he will be remembered for helping people, supporting families in need and bringing his community together. US player reinstated for World Cup after Trump calls Fifa | BBC News
6. Juli 2026
Folarin Balogun is available to play for the United States in their World Cup last-16 tie against Belgium after his one-game ban was suspended by Fifa. The 25-year-old striker was shown a straight red card for a foul on a Bosnia-Herzegovina player as the co-hosts won their last-32 match 2-0. Fifa said the automatic one-match ban would be suspended for a year. No reasoning behind the move was provided, beyond citing a rule which allows punishments to be suspended. AFP and Reuters are reporting that Trump called Fifa president Gianni Infantino earlier this week to ask for the red card to be reviewed. The BBC has not yet confirmed these reports. Huge crowds gather in Iran for funeral of Ayatollah Khamenei - killed in US airstrike | BBC News
4. Juli 2026
Huge crowds of people in Iran are gathering in Iran’s capital Tehran, to pay their respects at the funeral of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US airstrike on his compound, at the start of the recent war with Iran. The former Supreme Leader’s body is lying in state at the Grand Mosalla, ahead of his burial in his hometown of Mashhad next Thursday. The Iranian authorities say they expect between 15 and 20 million people to attend the ceremonies across Iran and Iraq over the coming days. Masses of supporters of the Islamic regime have gathered, chanting slogans against the US and demanding revenge for the Ayatollah's killing. Khamenei was killed during joint Israeli and US strikes on Iran in late February, in what quickly spiralled into a wider regional conflict. US President Donald Trump said Iran's government was "dying to settle" a peace deal to end the war after a preliminary agreement was struck between the two, adding: "We gave them a week off for a funeral because we're nice." Much of central Tehran will be locked down over as the funeral ceremony gets under way. Khamenei's body will lie in the Grand Mosalla for three days, alongside the remains of family members who were also killed in the air strikes.
